We listen carefully to what our project families tell us and we work with them to fulfill the goals they set for themselves as a community. Many people have little or no land and are often faced with steep terrain, rocky, acidic soil and scarce water. They are more likely to raise a few goats and plant grass and trees successfully than to plow up the land for grain crops. Heifer understands how important appropriate livestock are to our families, and we work with them to ensure the balance of crops, livestock and trees remain consistent with good ecology. We also help them improve their stock and teach them to protect the environment.
Livestock provide food for families in more ways than one. In many cases, the gift animals are valuable because of their byproducts like milk, eggs, butter and yogurt. Animals like water buffalo, llamas and alpacas also aid food production in other ways: manure enriches the soil; draft power enables families to sell excess vegetables or other produce; pack animals help transport products to markets.
