Society is the basis of morality, not religion. I could refer to numerous immoral acts in religious books or performed by religious organisations but I doubt it would get through.
But answer me this, if you need religion standing over you with the threat of eternal damnation in order to act moraly, how moral are you really as a person?  Lawrence why would/do people need to "believe" in made up nonsense in order not to be horrible to each other? I am an atheist and although I am cross that the extremely outmoded notion of organised religion plays any part in our lives, I am perfectly able to control how I behave with my fellow humans!
Serious question: do some people need to believe in religion because they are personally lacking somehow?
I mean you absolutely no ill and have religious friends that I like very much but I just don't get why anyone would choose to believe in something that flies the face of science!! Ricky Nilsson Exactly, it's like you're using your religion to not take into account things like your own actions. What's even worse are people who do things that are against their own religion in a terrible example of double standards.  Lawrence Monebi Ok - So how did Africans recognise good from bad before the missionaries gave them the bible? You have been successfully conditioned into a false belief my brother - we have our own story, the one they gave you to worship is merely a copy of that story. But the fact is this - before Christianity, African scriptures had no definition for evil or the devil - that's because it's not a concept that is inherent within our ancestral culture. In essence - before religion we as a people did not NEED to be told right from wrong - it was just a natural part of our souls moral compass. Parents teaching their kids, books, films and TV shows also teach the concept of good, bad, morality and what's acceptable and what is not.

Review I Bless The Rains Down In Africa Tee

I have no opinion on there being religious schools or not but religion isn't the only way to learn these things. Absolutely the wrong way around - religion is the basis for fear and rule following NOT morality. How can people be acting according to moral when they believe there is a space fairy in the sky watching and judging everything they do. Moral people act morally because that is in the nature not because they are trying to please some mystical creature. Lawrence, religion is not the basis for morality at all? That's the problem here, people conflate humanity with a social construct like religion.

Of course there are religious people who tie their values to the religious choices they make and frankly if people treat each other with care, respect and equality, I'm happy about that. But don't suggest that without religion these things do not exist. That's the wool that is pulled over people's eyes.

Religion itself is divisive in my view. It seeks to separate and give a hierarchy to humanity. Surely our choices to help others and seek equality are what should determine any value judgement, not which religion (a construct after all) we choose?

How can anyone say that it is better to be kind because "someone told me to, or I would be a sinner" than because they recognise someone else as a fellow person and respect them, regardless of creed, colour or belief?
